100 anos de Clepsydra

Celebration of the centenary of Camilo Pessanha’s poetry masterpiece.

Poems sung and recited at a musical performance directed by Maestro Simão Barreto.

Conductor: Simão Barreto

Born in East Timor on February 24, 1940, Simão Barreto came to Macau at the age of 18 to
study at the Seminar of S. José de Macau. After leaving the Seminar he entered as a public
servant in the Public Works Services and, at the same time, he enrolled in the Academy of
Music S.Pio X, created and directed by Father Aureo de Castro. With the help of his teacher
and friend he got a scholarship from the Gulbenkian Foundation to study at the National
Conservatory of Music in Lisbon, where he finished the Composition Course. Later, as a
violinist, he joined the former Portuguese National Radio Symphony Orchestra.
At the invitation of the local Government, in October 1987 he returned to Macau with the
purpose of creating a music school. And the Macao Conservatory became a reality on
September 25th, 1989. With 5 CDs recorded and 6 volumes of choral music printed, he is
the author of pieces for choir, symphonic and chamber music, among which are two cycles
of “Clepsidra”, with poems by Camilo Pessanha.

Soprano: Chao Kueng Fong

Born in Macau, Chao graduated from the Vocal Music Intermediate Course of the Macao Conservatory, under the tutelage of Wu Cunxin. She has won several professional excellence awards during the school period and has passed the Royal Academy of Music
Certificate 8. She participated in the 30th Macao International Music Festival Chamber
Opera “A Fragrant Dream” and performed at the Macao Vocal Festival organized by the
Macao Vocal Association.

Violin: Chu Weng Kuok

Chu Weng Kuok is a violinist, viola player and cellist in Macau. He graduated from the University of Macau and is now a string tutor for primary and secondary schools.

Violin: Chan Chang Meng

Born in Beijing in 1956, David Chan Chang Meng admitted to the Music Department of Beijing Institute of Education in 1981 and joined the Chamber Orchestra of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macau in 1987. He founded the Macau Chamber Music Association, the Macau Orchestra Youth Association in 1991, as the conductor of the orchestra, currently serves as the Conductor of the Philharmonic Association Orchestra, the Middle School Orchestra of Sheng Kung Hui Choi Kou School Macau and the Orchestra of Hou Kong Premier School Affiliated to Hou Kong Middle School.

Viola: Chan Ka Weng

Chan Ka Weng started learning violin when she was a child, and graduated from Macau Conservatory Music School, majoring in viola. Later on, she acquired a bachelor’s degree
from the Music Department of the Macau Polytechnic Institute.

Cello: Chan Ieng Kei

Macao cello and electronic keyboard player, Chan Ieng Kei graduated from the Music Education Program of Macau Polytechnic Institute.

Reciters: Isaac Pereira

Ezaak Ez (1966) is the artistic name of Isaac Pereira, who graduated in Communication Sciences by the University of Minho – Braga, Portugal and in Photography Studies by the Centre for Arts and Visual Communication – Lisbon, Portugal. He uses photography in creative collaborations for theatre and performance. His work includes participation in laboratories for the creation of texts for dramaturgy; the creation of installations and exhibitions; participation in artistic residencies in countries such as Portugal, Morocco and India. He is the author, among other texts, of “Search for Me in This Diary”, an autobiography around an idea from India.

Reciters: Dicky Tsang

Dicky Tsang, a local actor, performance supervisor, sound therapist and producer, wandering on stage, film and multidisciplinary performances. He is also currently one of the directors of Macau Space for Dance Idea
