The Macau Press in the 19th Century

Biography

Macau has played a pioneering role in the introduction of the press in China and in the East. Dating back to 1822, the newspaper Abelha da China is considered by researchers as the first real newspaper to be published in Macau and China. However, another newspaper had appeared a few years earlier: Início do Diário Noticioso. Throughout the XX century, the Macau press in Portuguese, Chinese and English underwent changing times, social changes and political fights. Such phenomena extended into the first two decades of the XX century, when Macau was in the midst of the birth of two Republics: Portugal and China.
